Some further advice for the onset of the spring season |
||

Morning all
As spring arrives, (well very soon) just some further useful advice..
Shed & Tool Security: "Spring is here! (almost)🌻 As you get back into the garden, remember that most shed thefts are crimes of opportunity. Always lock away your lawnmowers and power tools after use. Consider marking your equipment with your postcode using a UV pen to deter thieves". Garden Gate Discipline: "This is just a reminder to keep your garden gates and sheds locked and secure. We have seen an increase in premises being entered through a garden gate... for your bikes, you can fit a D-lock, which is very difficult to remove". The "1-Metre Rule": "Keep front hedges and fences under one metre in height so burglars cannot work on windows hidden from street view. Plant defensive shrubs like Pyracantha or Holly under vulnerable windows to create a painful natural barrier". Climbing Aids: "Do not leave ladders lying around or unlocked garden furniture. Burglars have been known to use ladders to access upper windows that appear to be unlocked". Open Window Alerts: "Warm weather means open windows. Please remember to close and lock them even if you are just in the garden, and never leave them open in unoccupied rooms". West Midlands Police Recommended "WIDEN" Checklist To "beat the burglar" during the spring months, the West Midlands Police recommend the WIDEN approach: Windows: Ensure they are locked, even on upper floors. Interior lights: Use timer switches so your home looks occupied if you stay out late into the brighter evenings. Doors: Use the "Lift, Lock, Remove" rule for uPVC doors—lift handle, turn key, and remove it. Exterior lights: Install dusk-to-dawn or motion-sensor lighting to eliminate hiding spots. Neighbours: Keep an eye out for each other and report suspicious activity via 101 or the West Midlands Police Online Chat | ||
