Reports of rogue traders in Seaford and South Heighton, Newhaven

There have been reports of rogue traders operating along the coast in the last week, approaching predominantly elderly residents and offering roof services.

Sadly, in some cases reported to police, money has been handed over but no work has ever been carried out.

Avoid being a victim by taking these steps:

•Remember: it’s your front door - you choose who you engage with, you are under no obligation to speak to unexpected callers.
•Don’t feel pressured into making quick decisions - genuine traders won’t insist that work is urgent or must be agreed immediately.
•Never part with cash on the door step, reputable traders do not ask for immediate payment or cash up front.
•Check with family, friends, or neighbours first if someone claims your home needs repairs, a second opinion can provide reassurance.
•Don’t let anyone inside unless you know who they are, legitimate professionals will arrange appointments and provide clear identification.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and close the door. 

Report suspicious behaviour to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133), or call 999 if you feel threatened.

Routine patrols lead to double-offence arrest 

Whilst on routine patrols in Seaford this weekend, officers spotted a vehicle being driven in a suspicious manner...

Trusting their instincts, the team carried out a stop-check of the vehicle, where they also had grounds to conduct a search under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act. This search resulted in controlled substances being located inside the vehicle!

Further checks revealed that the driver was disqualified and therefore uninsured - as a result, the car was seized under Section 165a of the Road Traffic Act, and the driver was arrested for the offences identified; they will soon have their day in Court.
