I wanted to provide an update regarding the theft of motor vehicles, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Good morning Cockfoster residents,
After looking at our overnights crimes they have been two thefts of LEXUS- NX.
If you own a Lexus, there a several practical steps you van take to reduce the risk of theft!
1. Use Strong Physical Security • Steering wheel lock – Visible deterrents (e.g., “The Club”) make thieves move on to easier targets. • Wheel clamps if parking long-term. • Secure parking – Use a locked garage whenever possible.
2. Protect Against Keyless Entry Theft
Many modern Lexus vehicles use keyless entry, which thieves can exploit with relay devices. • Store keys in RFID-blocking (Faraday) pouches at home. • Disable keyless entry in vehicle settings if you don’t need it. • Keep keys away from doors and windows in your house.
3. Install Tracking and Recovery Systems • GPS tracking devices help locate the vehicle if stolen. • Systems like aftermarket vehicle trackers or immobilisers can prevent the car from starting without authorization.
4. Use an Aftermarket Immobiliser • A secondary immobiliser requires a PIN sequence (e.g., using steering wheel buttons) before the car can start. • These systems are commonly recommended for high-theft vehicles.
5. Be Careful With Your Keys • Never leave keys in the vehicle, even briefly. • Avoid posting photos of your keys online (thieves can copy signals or key shapes). • If keys are lost or stolen, reprogram the vehicle immediately.
6. Choose Safe Parking Locations • Park in well-lit areas with CCTV. • When out in public, choose busy car parks rather than isolated streets. • At home, consider installing driveway cameras or motion lights.
7. Update Vehicle Software • Check with a **Lexus dealer for firmware updates or security recalls. • Updates can patch vulnerabilities in keyless entry systems.
8. Mark and Register Your Vehicle • Use VIN etching on windows and parts. • Register with national databases that help police track stolen vehicles.

We know that people can be concerned about the personal and financial impact of having their vehicle stolen, which is why we will pursue and arrest those who break the law. Please consider taking the following steps to keep your vehicle safe: Check that your vehicle is locked and secure every time you leave it. Thieves often look for easy opportunities to steal from vehicles. They will usually try the handles until they get lucky and find one that has been left unlocked. Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home and away from your front door. If you have a keyless entry vehicle, keep the key well away from the vehicle while at home and turn off wireless signals on your fob when its not being used. Consider putting the keys in a screened or signal blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag and check that it is still working every few months. Park your vehicle in a private garage if you can. If you don’t have access to one, try to park in a well –lit open space. Try to use public car parks that are part of the police approved Park Mark safer parking scheme. Secure your number plates with tamper resistant screws to avoid them being stolen and used by others.
