Catalytic converter thefts |
||
|
West Midlands Police (WMP) advises that catalytic converter thefts are often carried out by organized gangs and can take less than a minute. Because thieves may use violence when confronted, WMP urges the public not to approach suspects but to observe and report from a safe distance. Signs a Theft is in Progress Suspicious Jacking: A vehicle being raised with a car jack in an unusual location, such as a supermarket car park or residential street. Cutting Noises: Loud drilling, grinding, or sawing sounds coming from underneath a parked car. Coordinated Behavior: Individuals acting as "lookouts" while others work under the vehicle. Getaway Vehicles: A nearby car parked with its engine running, ready to quickly load the stolen part and flee. Symptoms After the Theft You will likely notice the theft as soon as you start your engine: Deafening Noise: A sudden, very loud roaring or "monster truck" sound that intensifies when you accelerate. Dashboard Alerts: Your Check Engine Light may illuminate due to missing exhaust sensors. Poor Performance: The car may feel sluggish, have reduced power, or "run rough". Visual Evidence: If you look underneath, you will see a clean-cut gap in the exhaust pipe between the engine and the silencer. How to Respond Report in Progress: If you see a theft happening now, call 999 immediately. Note down the suspects' vehicle registration if it is safe to do so. Report After Discovery: If you find your converter has been stolen, report it to West Midlands Police online or call 101. Do Not Drive: It is illegal to drive without a catalytic converter as you will exceed emissions limits; you could face a fine of up to £1,000 for cars or £2,500 for vans. To better protect your vehicle, consider parking in a locked garage or using a manufacturer-approved guard tested to Sold Secure Gold standards.
