Today, Emilee and I had the absolute pleasure of spending time with the incredible volunteers from the Canal Trust. Watching them in action was genuinely inspiring. Their passion for protecting and improving our local environment shines through in everything they do.
From clearing overgrown areas to restoring natural habitats and keeping the towpath safe and welcoming, their work makes a real difference. It’s easy to take a peaceful walk along the canal for granted, but seeing the effort, care, and teamwork behind the scenes gave us a whole new appreciation for this beautiful space.
Towpath Safety: Protecting Volunteers and the Public
Towpath Safety Rules
• Cyclists: slow your pace – Use a bell or call out when approaching. Pass people with care. • Keep dogs under control – Use a lead where needed and always clean up after your dog. • Give volunteers room to work – If you see maintenance or conservation activity, please keep a safe distance. • Watch your footing – Towpaths can be narrow, uneven, or slippery, especially after rain. • Respect wildlife – Stick to the path and avoid disturbing nesting birds or animals. • Take litter home – If bins are full, please don’t leave rubbish behind. • Be mindful at blind corners – Slow down and keep to the left where possible. • Report hazards – If you spot damage or anything unsafe, let the Canal Trust know. A Huge Thank You To the volunteers we met today: thank you for your dedication, your hard work, and the pride you take in caring for our canal. You make this place better for all of us. | ||
