I wanted to provide you an update regarding Shoplifting, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. This Week in Balham – Keeping Our Community Safe
This week, officers from the Balham Safer Neighbourhood Team have been carrying out high‑visibility patrols along Balham High Road, focusing on preventing shoplifting and supporting our local businesses. By working closely with shop staff and increasing our presence, we’ve already seen a noticeable reduction in attempted thefts. Reports of shoplifting have also dropped significantly this week, showing the positive impact that visible policing can have. Building strong relationships with our local stores remains a key priority for us, and we’re grateful for the continued partnership and support from the community.
Officers have also been conducting evening and late‑night patrols across the ward, continuing through to around 2am. During these patrols, multiple Section 59 warnings were issued to drivers found driving in an anti‑social manner, placing other road users at risk. ASB warnings were also given where appropriate. In addition, three vehicles were seized after drivers were found to have no insurance or were unable to provide the correct documents proving ownership.
A known shoplifter was also arrested at Sainsbury’s in Balham. They have been issued with an ASB warning and a banning letter as part of our ongoing work to tackle repeat offending.
We’ll be out again from around 7am on Tuesday, focusing on those who target shops as they open. If you see us, please do say hello, we’re always happy to stop, chat and engage with you.
Keeping Balham safe remains our priority. 👮♂️💙
Shoplifting is a crime that can have a substantial negative impact on local businesses across London. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. For more guidance, see our page on how to spot a shoplifter. We are working on our brand-new strategy for how we police London and we want your help. Our New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy will guide how we deliver on behalf of Londoners over the next three years. |
