Car Crime Using Scanner/Relay Devices

We are seeing an increase in car crime in the area involving electronic scanner and relay devices. These tools allow offenders to intercept or boost the signal from keyless entry fobs, enabling them to unlock and sometimes start vehicles without causing visible damage.

Offenders may:

Operate close to homes, driveways, or vehicles late at night

Work in pairs, often carrying small electronic devices

Target vehicles with keyless entry systems

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around parked cars, please report it immediately.

How You Can Protect Your Vehicle

Store keys away from doors and windows, ideally in a metal tin or RFID‑blocking pouch

Disable keyless entry if your vehicle’s settings allow

Use a steering lock or wheel clamp for visible deterrence

Update vehicle software where available

Install CCTV or motion‑activated lighting at your property

Check your vehicle is locked—relay attacks can unlock cars silently

Consider a tracking device for high‑value vehicles

If You Witness Suspicious Activity

Do not approach offenders

Note clothing, direction of travel, vehicle details

Contact police via:

999 if a crime is in progress

101 for non‑emergency reports
