HOW TO CHECK POLICE AND PCSO'S ID
Afternoon Resident
To verify the identity of a West Midlands Police (WMP) officer, you should primarily request their warrant card and, if still unsure, verify their details via 101.
1. Request a Warrant Card Every genuine WMP officer, whether in uniform or plain clothes, must carry and show their police warrant card upon request as proof of authority. Visual Check: A standard warrant card is credit-card sized and includes the officer's photograph, name, rank, and the West Midlands Police logo. PCSOs: Police Community Support Officers carry a similar card that explicitly identifies them as a "Police Community Support Officer". Doorstep Safety: You are entitled to ask an officer to show their card through a window or letterbox before opening your door.
2. Verify via 101 If you doubt an officer's legitimacy, call 101 to verify their identity, name, and shoulder/collar number via the force operator. Radio Check: Officers can radio the Force Control Room to confirm their identity on speakerphone. Incident Log: You can ask for an incident log number to verify their presence with 101.
3. What WMP Officers Will Never Do Legitimate officers will not ask for bank details, money transfers, or cash payments.
