How to Reduce Your RiskFor all residentsKeep valuables out of sight and avoid leaving jewellery boxes visible through windows.Use timer lights to make your home look occupied when you’re out.Install CCTV or video doorbells if possible.Lock all windows and doors, even for short trips out.Photograph gold jewellery and record serial numbers for phones and tablets.
Extra Advice for Elderly ResidentsOffenders sometimes target homes where they believe the resident may be older or living alone. These steps can help: Use door chains or viewers before opening the door to unexpected callers.Never keep large amounts of cash at home — burglars know this is common with older residents.Keep spare keys out of sight and avoid leaving them near letterboxes or windows.Ask trusted neighbours to keep an eye out if you're away for appointments, hospital visits, or holidays.Consider a monitored alarm system, which can be especially reassuring if you live alone.If you support an older family member, please share this advice with them.
