In June last year Roxy, a German shepherd, was taken to the vets having been found in Lincoln in a particularly poor state of health. Several days later she had to be put to sleep due to her multiple neglected un-treated health problems. The dog’s owner, 48-year-old Steven Broughton, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court and was banned from owning any animal for five years. Sadly, a member of the public found Roxy, an older German Shepherd on the 7 June 25 in an emaciated state on Laughton Way, Lincoln. They kindly took the dog to the vets who called the police; after treatment Roxy was taken to police kennels. Due to severe ongoing health problems Roxy was seen by a vet on several more occasions. The dog continued to suffer and despite best efforts to treat her, she continued to be in pain. Roxy was put to sleep on humane grounds to end her suffering. Broughton, had earlier flagged officers down reporting he couldn’t find his dog. In interview he said he could not afford to pay to get her treated and was trying to help her by applying some topical cream. DC Gemma Oxby, the Forces Dog Legislation Officer, said: “I would like to pass my sincere thanks to the person who took Roxy to the vets, and those who treated and cared for her. “We shouldn’t have to remind people to get prompt treatment for any animals who have health issues. “When we do see animal cruelty we will act swiftly and robustly to put owners who have failed their animals before the courts “The penalty for causing unnecessary suffering is up to five years in prison and a ban from keeping animals.” Brougton, of St Hughs Street, Lincoln, pleaded guilty to the offence of causing Roxy unnecessary suffering on 3 February, at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court. He was disqualified from owning any animal for five years. He has a Community Order to participate in rehabilitation activity for 30 days. He must pay fines and costs of £299.
