Theft of Motor Vehicle |

Dear Resident
A BMW X3 has been reported stolen from the driveway of a property in HAYWOOD PARK CHORLEYWOOD on the 10th of February between 0230am and 0330am. It is suspected that a relay system has been used to clone the key fob signal as both sets of keys were still present at the address. This is commonly referred to as a keyless theft. A vehicle that has a push button start or slot for the key fob would be referred to as a keyless car. It is a vehicle that does not have an ignition barrel.
All vehicles that use this system are vulnerable to this type of theft. A way to safeguard against this is to place both sets of keys, (Main set and spare set) into a faraday pouch or signal blocking pouch. These are relatively cheap to purchase online or at retail outlets and it is best to purchase a pouch for each set of keys. By placing your key fob into the pouch, the signal will be blocked. A simple way to see if this is effective is to sit in your car with your keys in the pouch. You should not be able to start the car as the signal from the key fob to the car onboard computer should be blocked. It is important to place keys into your faraday pouch as soon as you arrive home. This type of theft usually occurs at night.
Some vehicles allow you to turn off the signal remotely and you will need to check with your car manufacturer to see if this possible. Other deterrents can be to use a steering lock or pedal lock.
