Unsure if the person knocking on your door, is a legitimate charity collector or not? Here’s how to safely identify and handle charity callers: Key Steps to identifying if the caller at your door is legitimate:- Check Photo ID: Ask to see their ID badge, which should be properly printed (not handwritten or photocopied) and feature their photograph, name, and the charity's details.Verify Charity Number: All legitimate charities in the UK have a registered charity number. Ask for it and check it immediately on the Charity Commission website. Look for Proper Documentation: Genuine collectors should have a "Letter of Authority" confirming they are allowed to collect on behalf of the charity.Check for Licensing: Door-to-door, face-to-face, and bag collections usually require a license from the local authority or the police.Examine Materials: If they are dropping off bags, check that they include the charity's name, registered number, and a landline contact number. Reputable, professional fundraisers will have branded clothing, sealed, untampered collection containers, and will be comfortable with you asking questions. Red Flags it may be a Bogus Caller:- Pushy Behaviour: The caller pressures you for an immediate donation or cash.Lack of Information: They cannot provide a registered charity number or are vague about what the charity does.Alternative Payment Methods: They ask for cash, gift cards, or wire transfers, rather than setting up a direct debit. Never disclose your security card no (called CVC on the back of your card). No Official Branding: They are not wearing a branded tabard, t-shirt, or jacket, and lack a proper ID badge. Safety Measures Use a Door Chain: Keep your door chain on while you verify their identification.Don't Feel Obliged: You can ask them to leave at any time.Check Independently: If they claim to be from a well-known charity, find the charity's phone number independently (not from the caller) and call to verify the collection in your area.Use "No Cold Calling" Stickers: Displaying this can prevent legitimate, regulated, and bogus callers alike. Contact your local Police to obtain one. If you feel threatened or suspect a scam, do not open the door and call the police on 101 or 999. |
