Morning Resident
Since 2020, both Wednesfield and Heath Town have stepped up efforts to combat the rise in disposable vape litter and illegal sales. While vaping is a growing environmental concern, local authorities have implemented several positive measures: 1. Increased Enforcement & Seizures Trading Standards Operations: The City of Wolverhampton Council has significantly increased "test purchase" operations in Wednesfield and Heath Town. Since 2023, thousands of illegal, oversized vapes (which are more prone to leaking and being littered) have been seized from local convenience stores. Targeting Underage Sales: Local policing teams have focused on shops near schools, such as those near Wednesfield High Academy, to reduce the distribution of vapes to minors, which directly correlates to local littering. 2. Enhanced Litter Management The Wednesfield Public Realm Project: As part of the £2m+ High Street investment, new "smart" bins and redesigned seating areas are being installed. These are designed to be more accessible, encouraging people to dispose of waste properly rather than dropping it in the Wednesfield Canal or market areas. Heath Town Estate Cleansing: Under the Heath Town Regeneration, the Council’s "Clean & Safe" teams have increased the frequency of sweeps around high-density housing blocks to clear hazardous electronic waste, including lithium-battery vapes. 3. Dedicated Recycling Points Retailer Take-Back: Major retailers at Bentley Bridge Retail Park (like Sainsbury's and B&M) have introduced dedicated vape recycling bins. This prevents the batteries from entering the general waste stream, where they cause fires at the local Wolverhampton Energy from Waste plant. Household Waste Centers: Residents are encouraged to use the Anchor Lane Tip for safe disposal of rechargeable and disposable devices. 4. Community Action "Love Your Street" Campaigns: Local volunteer groups in Wednesfield have organised community litter picks, specifically reporting high concentrations of vape packaging to the council to help map "hotspots" for enforcement. Pro-tip: If you see a shop selling vapes to children or notice a significant "hotspot" for vape litter, you can report it via the Wolverhampton Report It tool.
