Bike Theft Crime Prevention Advice

Dear Residents,

We are writing to share some simple and effective steps you can take to keep your pedal bike safe from theft. Unfortunately, bike theft is often a crime of opportunity, but the good news is that a few practical measures can significantly reduce the risk.

Lock Your Bike Properly

Even if you are leaving your bike for just a short moment, please ensure it is locked securely.

Use two locks whenever possible – a strong D‑lock for the frame and a cable or second lock for the wheels.

Look for locks rated Silver or Gold by Sold Secure.

Keep locks tight and off the ground to make them harder to tamper with.

Choose the Right Parking Spot

Where you leave your bike matters.

Park in well‑lit and busy areas with natural surveillance.

Lock your bike to a fixed, immovable object, such as a solid bike rack or metal rail.

Avoid posts or objects that the bike could be easily lifted over.

Secure Your Bike at Home

A high number of bike thefts happen at people’s homes.

Store your bike indoors whenever possible.

If you use a shed or garage, consider fitting:

A ground anchor,
A heavy-duty lock or chain,
Good lighting or an alarmed lock.

Ensure shed and garage doors remain locked.

Mark and Register Your Bike

Marking your bike makes it far less attractive to thieves and increases the chance of recovery if stolen.

Mark the frame using a UV pen or a forensic marking kit.

Keep a Record of Your Bike

Taking a few minutes to record key details can really help if your bike is ever lost or stolen.
Please keep photos of:

Both sides of the bike,

The make, model, and colour,

The frame number (usually located near the pedals on the underside of the frame).

Report Suspicious Activity

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around bikes or bike racks – for example, trying multiple locks or carrying cutting tools – please report it. Your information could help prevent crime and protect others.
