Theft from Motor Vehicle

Dear Resident

We are sending out this message to raise awareness around the recent increase of theft from vehicle crime. Over the last few months with the nights getting dark earlier we have seen a rise in theft from vehicle where tool vans are being targeted and vehicles with items visible inside.

Criminals are always on the lookout for opportunist crime where if they see something that is easy and quick to gain access to they will take a chance at it as it is low risk and high reward. This includes vehicles that may have unlocked doors, items visible in the front or back and vans with tools that do not have any additional locks and are easy to access in places with no CCTV.

Below I will list ways to better protect your property and vehicles however, please feel free to talk to us in person if you see us out and about or at any of our events that we advertise to the local area.

Tips to prevent vehicle crime:

Ensure you lock doors and shut windows/sunroof when leaving your vehicle unattended.

Always remove keys from the ignition when you are not with the vehicle

When parking, remember to set your immobiliser or alarm or use an approved steering lock or gear lever clamp.

Never leave valuables in your vehicle – not even in the glove box or boot – and keep all possessions out of sight – even coats, sunglasses and carrier bags.

Remove your satnav and holder and wipe away suction marks which could indicate that a satnav is stored in your vehicle.

Be aware of your keys. Don’t leave them lying around, visible or in pockets in changing rooms where they could be taken. Don’t leave them visible on a windowsill or near to your front door, where they could be “hooked” through the letterbox.

If you have a keyless entry car use a signal blocking bag and consider using additional trackers and steering wheel locks.

Store car ownership documents at home, not in your car.

Secure number plates with anti-theft screws.

Leave your car in a well light area and if possible also covered by CCTV

For vans with tools try and take them out when possible

Put stickers on the back of the van that says tools are not left inside over night

Invest in additional deadlocks to make gaining access harder
