All, some more interesting history fact for you… The history of Wednesfield police station and some facts from the 18th century - current…
The history of policing in Wednesfield began with a local volunteer system before transitioning into a professional force in the late 19th century. Today, the local station on Alfred Squire Road is scheduled for permanent closure as part of a West Midlands Police cost-cutting strategy. Early Policing (1750–1880) The Vestry System: From 1750, policing was handled by a local constable nominated annually by the Wednesfield Vestry. Resistance to Change: In the 1840s, residents successfully petitioned against the formation of a professional county constabulary, preferring local men for local matters. Professionalization: It wasn't until 1880 that professional policing arrived under the newly formed Staffordshire County Council. Historical Locations Wolverhampton Road : A former Wednesfield police station once stood on Wolverhampton Road opposite the old entrance to New Cross Hospital to cover the Heath Town area. Graiseley Lane : Historically, a police presence was also maintained in the area around Graiseley Lane including an "Old Police House " that served as a residential base for officers. Modern Era & Closure Alfred Squire Road: The current station has operated for several decades but stopped offering a public front desk following budget cuts in 2018. Closure Plans: In 2021, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner confirmed the station would close. Future Transition: Neighbourhood teams are expected to "co-locate" into a shared community space within Wednesfield to maintain a local presence after the building is sold. Ian | ||
