Teenage boy spotted brandishing weapon in Northampton home
Multiple weapons have been removed from the streets of Northampton after a teenage boy was seen brandishing a large machete inside a residential property.
Officers from Northamptonshire Police’s Youth Violence Intervention Unit (YVIU) spotted the 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, waving the edged weapon while carrying out proactive patrols near the address.
As with reports of all such incidents, the officers called the incident into the Force Control Room and Armed Response Officers were deployed to the address shortly before 10.20pm on Thursday, January 15.
The teenager from Northampton was arrested and during a search of the house, officers found a total of six weapons - a Zombie knife, two combat style knives and three machetes – in one of the bedrooms.
He was charged with four counts of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place, and on Saturday, January 17, at Northampton Magistrates’ Court, the teenager was remanded into secure accommodation until his next hearing.
On Tuesday, January 20, at Wellingborough Youth Court, three of the charges were withdrawn but the boy was sentenced to a two-year youth referral order with 24-month supervision after he pleaded guilty to the fourth count of possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.
As part of the order, the teenage boy will have to abide by strict terms and conditions, which include 90-day intensive supervision, a six-month residence requirement, complete 90 hours of unpaid work, a 12-week mentoring programme and pay a victim surcharge cost of £26.
