I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Personal theft (for example pick-pocketing), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. We would like to make residents aware of a recent increase in thefts targeting people withdrawing cash from ATMs in the area. Offenders have been approaching victims while they are using cash machines, distracting them, or watching over their shoulder before stealing the money moments after it is withdrawn. In some cases, offenders have also attempted to observe PIN numbers to facilitate further theft.
These incidents often happen quickly, and victims may not realise what has occurred until they have left the location. Offenders may work alone or in pairs, using distraction techniques such as asking questions, pointing at the screen, or pretending to assist.
How to Help Protect Yourself When using an ATM: Stay aware of your surroundings – If someone is standing too close or acting suspiciously, cancel the transaction and move away. Shield your PIN – Use your hand or body to cover the keypad when entering your number. Avoid distractions – Do not engage in conversation with strangers while withdrawing cash. Check the machine – If the ATM looks damaged, has loose parts, or seems unusual, do not use it. Secure your money immediately – Put cash and your card away before walking off. Use ATMs inside banks or shops where possible – These locations are generally safer and monitored.
If someone approaches you during your withdrawal: Cancel the transaction immediately. Walk away and find a safer place. If you feel threatened, call the police straight away.
If You Have Been a Victim If you believe you have been targeted or have any information regarding recent incidents, please contact us on 101 or report online via the Kent Police website. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, always dial 999. Your vigilance helps keep our community safe. Please share this message with family members, neighbours, and friends—especially those who may be more vulnerable.
I have supplied informational posters in the stores within our wards that have ATMs, and asked them to display them in prominent and relevant places. I have also advised them to make staff aware and for them to try and remain vigilant around those areas.
