Pavement Parking |

|
Dear Resident,
Hi all…
Pavement parking
West Midlands Police frequently uses WMNow to address "shocking examples" of dangerous pavement parking. Below are specific message samples and enforcement guidelines related to this issue:
1. "Don't Plonk It! - Park It!" Campaign This is a specific West Midlands Police initiative aimed at reducing obstructive parking. Sample Alert: "Don't Plonk It – Park It! Neighbourhood teams have been alerted to obstructive parking. This is extremely dangerous for visually impaired individuals and people with pushchairs. Being 'ditzy' is no excuse; vehicles found blocking paths may be seized if other violations are found". Action Taken: "Perry Barr NHT issued obstruction tickets this morning to inconsiderate vehicle owners... who were forcing parents with pushchairs and wheelchair users into the middle of the road". 2. School & Junction Safety Updates School Parking Alert: "Good afternoon, Pick-up and drop-off times are busy. Please think about your neighbours; parking on the pavement blocks the pathway for the most vulnerable people in your community". Junction Warning: "Parking near junctions causes serious risk... you are creating a blind spot that risks lives. If you park on a junction, you will receive a fine and three penalty points". 3. How to Report Pavement Parking West Midlands Police advises different reporting routes depending on the situation: To Local Council: Report parking on dropped kerbs, double yellow lines, or in restricted bays (like Blue Badge or taxi bays) directly to the Birmingham City Council or your relevant local council. To West Midlands Police: If a vehicle is causing a physical obstruction (blocking the pavement entirely) or is parked dangerously near a junction, report it as Anti-Social Behaviour on the WMP website or call 101. Operation Snap: You can submit dashcam or photographic evidence of dangerous parking directly via the WMP Operation Snap portal. 4. Enforcement & Future Changes Police Powers: Officers can issue tickets for "wilful obstruction" and, in some cases, seize vehicles that are uninsured or untaxed while they are parked illegally. New Laws: Starting in late 2026, local councils in the West Midlands are expected to receive new powers to introduce wider pavement parking bans.
