Ensure garages/sheds are locked, side gates are secure, and use anti-climb measures like gravel or prickly plants. Securing the Perimeter Doors and Windows: Ensure all doors and windows are locked, even when inside. Use deadlocks if available.Keys: Never leave keys in the door or in view from a window or letterbox.Lighting: Use automatic timer switches for lights and radios to make the home look occupied, particularly in the evening.Gates and Fences: Lock side gates to prevent access to the rear of the property.Garden: Keep tools, ladders, and bins locked away so they cannot be used to break into your home. Protecting Valuables Vehicle Security: Keep car keys hidden and secure, not in the hallway or near the door, to prevent car key burglary.Marking Property: Use UV pens or forensic marking solutions (e.g., SmartWater) to mark valuables and register them on immobilise.Sheds/Garages: Use high-quality padlocks with non-exposed screws on sheds. Alarm and Security Systems Burglar Alarms: Install and set your alarm every time you leave the house.Visibility: Ensure your home is visible from the street (hedges/fences under 1𝑚) to prevent thieves from having a hidden space to work.Security Lighting: Install motion-activated, dusk-till-dawn lighting at the front and rear. When Away Cancel milk or newspaper deliveries if going on holiday.Ask a neighbour to park on your drive or clear mail. If a burglar breaks in while you are home, West Midlands Police advises that you do not confront them and put your safety first. |
