Staffordshire Police have seen a significant increase in the amount of reports relating to ‘doorstep callers’ or ‘cold callers'. This type of crime generally relates to criminals posing as safety inspectors / landscapers / workmen / charity workers knocking on doors in an attempt to scam the occupant out of money for works that do not need to be carried out, or charging an excessive amount of money for said work. This type of scam is often targeted towards elderly and vulnerable members of the public. Please warn elderly and vulnerable neighbours to follow the STOP, CHAIN, CHECK rule when people call at the door. STOP – If you are not expecting anybody and they don’t have an appointment, don’t let them in. CHAIN- Use your door chain or bar before opening the door CHECK – Ask to see ID and double check this.
Local residents are encouraged to contact the police immediately if they have any suspicions about doorstep callers.
