Resident, Key Findings of our recent survey. Awareness and Perception Awareness of Neighbourhood Watch is uneven across north Norfolk. While many respondents are familiar with the organisation and view it positively, a significant minority were unaware that it operated in their local area. Negative perceptions are rare and are primarily associated with a lack of visible local activity rather than opposition to the organisation’s aims. Engagement and Expectations Most respondents feel that their engagement with Neighbourhood Watch meets expectations, particularly where there is an existing sense of connection. However, some report declining satisfaction due to reduced local communication and information that feels too generic. Uncertainty about engagement levels suggests that expectations are not always clearly communicated at the point of joining. Local Coordination and Communication Local coordination is a significant weakness. Most respondents do not know who their local coordinator is, and some believe no coordinator exists in their area. Even where coordinators are known, contact is infrequent. Interest in being connected to a coordinator is limited and often relates to identification or reassurance rather than active involvement, indicating unclear understanding of the coordinator role and value. Information Needs and Priorities Views are mixed on the need for more information about organisational priorities. Where respondents do want more information, they emphasise the need for clearer definitions of anti-social behaviour, more regular and practical updates, and greater visibility of local coordinators in setting and communicating priorities. Community and Digital Engagement Opinions are divided on the usefulness of a local online community. Supporters see potential for improved connection and information sharing, while others are concerned about the risk of negativity and complaint-led discussion. Respondents favour constructive, relationship-focused engagement over grievance-based platforms. Anti-Social Behaviour Anti-social behaviour is generally not perceived as a major issue. Where it is reported, concerns are highly localised and typically relate to litter, speeding, noise, or substance use. Respondents stress the importance of clearly distinguishing genuine anti-social behaviour from normal community activity. Overall Assessment The survey indicates a strong base of goodwill towards Norfolk Neighbourhood Watch. However, its perceived value drops sharply where local presence and communication are weak. The primary opportunity for improvement lies in strengthening local coordination, improving visibility and consistency, and providing clearer, more locally relevant communication, rather than pursuing broad expansion. Thank you also to those who provided an email address for a follow up discussion with me. Implications for Consideration Improve visibility and clarity of local coordinator rolesStrengthen locally focused communication and updatesSet clearer expectations for members at the point of joiningEnsure consistent messaging on anti-social behaviourApproach digital community building cautiously, with clear moderation and purposeBest Wishes Les https://www.givinglottery.org.uk/support/norfolk-neighbourhood-watch
