Tips to prevent your van being broken into or stolen

Dear Resident,

Most offences that involve a vehicle being broken into are normally committed by opportunist thieves who will walk the streets looking for items that have been left in the vehicle.

Whereas vans are normally targeted for the tools that have been left inside or for the vehicle itself.

Having items stolen from a ‘work’ van not only leaves you with the damage that has been caused, but also the need to replace the tools and lost revenue from being unable to work until the tools are replaced.

So, what can you do to reduce the risk of your van being targeted?

Below are some tips you could consider which will make your van less attractive to a thief.

Keep the van locked when you are not in it and ensure you double lock it.

Make sure that your van alarm is set.

Do not leave any valuables or "interesting" items on display.

Don't leave tools in a van overnight.

Consider using ‘No tools are left in this vehicle overnight’ stickers.

If you need to leave tools in the van, consider parking in a secure compound or locked garage.

Consider marking your tools and advertise that tools in the van have been marked.

Use additional security measures such as steering wheel locks, that will make it much more difficult to steal the van.

Consider fitting motion activated CCTV that will alert you to movement near your van.
