We’ve seen a recent increase in reports of counterfeit banknotes being used in shops across the area. We’re asking local businesses, shop owners and retail staff to take a moment to check notes carefully during transactions. How to Spot a Counterfeit Note - Check the feel – Genuine notes have raised print and a distinctive texture. - Look for holograms and foil features – Tilt the note to confirm they shift and change correctly. - Use a UV light – Real notes show bright, sharp fluorescent features under UV. - Check the watermark and security thread – Hold the note up to the light to confirm they're present and clear. - Compare with a note you know is genuine – Differences often stand out side‑by‑side. If you suspect a counterfeit note: - Do not return the note to the customer. - Do not put yourself at risk – be polite and discreet. - Note the person’s description, any companions, and direction of travel if they leave. - Keep CCTV footage where possible. - Report it to us immediately. Report it - If you believe you’ve been handed a counterfeit note or have concerns about suspicious activity, please report it to us via 101 or online. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
Working together, we can stop counterfeit currency from harming our local businesses. Thank you for your vigilance and cooperation. |
