Extra stop and search powers introduced in Derby city centre |
A section 60 order has been imposed to give officers extra stop and search powers in Derby city centre. The order was imposed at 10.15am today (Thursday 22 January) and will remain in place until 7pm today. It will cover the area highlighted in red on the map and has been introduced following increased reports of disorder and to help officers to disrupt violence. The section 60 will give officers additional powers to stop and search individuals and vehicles for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments.
Inspector Rachel Fowkes, of the Derby City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The decision to impose any kind of order is not taken lightly and we always carefully consider the wider impact on the community. “We feel it is proportionate in this case to impose the order which will help to ensure the safety of members of the public. “In addition, officers will be stepping up high-visibility patrols in the city centre so people may notice an increased police presence. “If you suspect a crime is happening or see something suspicious please report this to us.” Emergencies can be reported to us by ringing 999. You can also anonymously contact the independent charity CrimeStoppers, on 0800 555 111, or by visiting the CrimeStoppers website. | ||
