In 2026, West Midlands Police (WMP) is actively recruiting for a variety of roles including police officers, staff, and volunteers. Starting salaries for new officers begin at £31,164, with the potential to earn over £50,000 within seven years.
1. Police Officer Entry Routes (2026) WMP offers several pathways depending on your current qualifications: Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP): A direct two-year "on-the-job" training route with no university study requirement. Candidates need Level 3 qualifications (A-levels or equivalent). Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA): A three-year program where you earn a fully funded BSc degree in Professional Policing Practice while working. Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP): For those who already have a degree, this two-year route includes a graduate diploma. Detective Pathways: Specific detective-led programs are available via both the PCEP and DHEP routes. Police Now Graduate Programme: A national program for graduates, currently offering roles such as Counter Terrorism Detectives in the West Midlands starting in July 2026. 2. Police Staff & Professional Roles As of January 2026, vacancies are open for specialized and support staff: Investigative Roles: Police Staff Investigators for the Public Protection Unit (PPU) and Financial Investigators for the Economic Crime Unit. Support & Technical: Vacancies include Senior Software Developers, AWS Infrastructure Analysts, and Training Officers. Force Contact: Recruitment for 999/101 call handlers and dispatchers, often with shift allowances taking starting pay to circa £36,000. 3. Volunteering & Early Careers Special Constables: Volunteers with the same powers as regular officers. Must be at least 17 to apply. Cadet Leaders: Volunteers (18+) needed to mentor young people aged 13–17 in units across Birmingham, Coventry, and the Black Country. Internships: Graduate intern opportunities are available to start in May 2026.
