We have noticed that there continues to be vehicle crime which includes theft of a vehicle, theft from a vehicle and interference of a vehicle.

We wanted to let you know that this evening we have conducted a vehicle door-handle Op whereby we have checked to see if vehicles have been secured / locked.

One of the areas we have attended this evening was the Sandridge ward. Within this ward we have patrolled and checked vehicles on Warner Close, Hopkins Crescent, St. Leonards Court, House Lane.

Upon doing this, we have checked 96 vehicles and found 9 vehicles to be insecure and unlocked. (We did of course inform the owners of these vehicles to assist and insure they were locked).

Please can you ensure your vehicles are locked and secure when unattended.

Tips to prevent vehicle crime:

Ensure you lock doors and shut windows/sunroof when leaving your vehicle unattended.

Always remove keys from the ignition when you are not with the vehicle

When parking, remember to set your immobiliser or alarm or use an approved steering lock or gear lever clamp.

Never leave valuables in your vehicle – not even in the glove box or boot – and keep all possessions out of sight – even coats, sunglasses and carrier bags.

Remove your satnav and holder and wipe away suction marks which could indicate that a satnav is stored in your vehicle.

Be aware of your keys. Don’t leave them lying around, visible or in pockets in changing rooms where they could be taken. Don’t leave them visible on a windowsill or near to your front door, where they could be “hooked” through the letterbox.

If you have a keyless entry car use a signal blocking bag and consider using additional trackers and steering wheel locks.

Store car ownership documents at home, not in your car.

Secure number plates with anti-theft screws.
