Police Checkpoint #2 |
||
|
Dear residents, We hope you are all keeping well. Today, local officers worked in partnership with Streatham Neighbourhood Officers to conduct a second joint Police Checkpoint. This operation focused on identifying mopeds with improper documentation and illegal or modified e‑bikes travelling towards the Brixton area. The purpose of this activity is to reduce vehicle‑enabled crime, including drug‑related offences, traffic offences and anti‑social behaviour.
During the operation, officers: Issued multiple citations to car drivers, with further motorists given warnings for a range of traffic violations
At one point, a rider attempted to flee when signalled to stop, weaving through traffic at speed. A Streatham Sergeant later identified the same individual — now wearing different clothing — and his vehicle was subsequently seized. We will continue to run these checkpoints to reduce moped‑enabled crime and improve safety in and around Brixton as some of these E-Bikes are being driven on public pavements at fast speeds.
Legal Requirements for E‑BikesTo be road‑legal in the UK, an electric bike must meet the criteria of an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC). Key requirements include: The motor must not provide assistance above 15.5 mph (25 km/h).
If an e‑bike does not meet these requirements, it is legally classed as a motor vehicle. Riders are then required to have: A valid driving licence ✅
Non‑compliant vehicles may be seized, and riders may face fines or further enforcement action.
Thank you and stay safe. 🏍️🏍️🏍️
Many Thanks, PCSO Alvi
