Good Afternoon Residents and businesses of Hoxton West I am PC Murray and one of your local officers for your area, in the past few months our team has been making contact with our local Businesses in regard to a rise in Burglary's targeting Businesses in our area, due to this I have included a list of few preventative measures you can take to make your workplaces less appealing to those looking to enter your premises, however on a separate note thank you for all our residents and business owners who have signed up to MET Engage it is really a fantastic system to connect our community and helps us solve crime in your area please help us spread Met Engage to your neighbours, I shall be posting every now and again the good work the team does alongside our usual alerts for community events and pushing out relevant crime prevention advice when required or requested. Guidance for premises • Examine the outside of your premises. A well maintained exterior free of graffiti and rubbish will reduce the likelihood of criminals targeting your business. • Try to remove graffiti on your premises. If there is graffiti in the vicinity, but not on your property, inform your local council who will make arrangements to have it removed. • Identify areas that may be vulnerable to forced entry and rectify these. • Ensure service doors are locked and secure when not in use. • Ensure that you have a monitored alarm and that it is fully operational • Review your CCTV to confirm that it is operational, provides good quality images and covers your vulnerable areas. • In case of emergency, make sure there is a list of key holders who can be contacted. • Consider moving high value goods away from display windows overnight. • Try not to keep cash on the premises and use a safe with a time lock. • Ensure that stock rooms are locked and have stock out of sight. • Ensure your keys are not left in the shop and that only designated staff have access to them. • Consider the environment, e.g. are there overgrown bushes, wheelie bins or trees that could assist someone hiding from view or help them gain access? • Ensure there is sufficient lighting around the premises – especially loading areas. • Consider the presence of any combustible materials left out such as packaging that could create a fire risk (arson).
Physical protection • Doors and windows are particularly vulnerable – use security rated products. • External shutters are not recommended as these require planning approval. Alternatives are glass which is laminated or security film can be applied to existing glass to make it more resistant. • An insurance rated safe should be bolted down to the floor. Anti-tamper sensors can be fitted to set off an alarm if attacked. • CCTV is highly recommended but technical guidance should be sought. • Smoke generating devices can be used which will activate on entry.
