Community Alert: Increase in Vehicle Crime |
||
|
Dear Resident,
I'm writing to inform you of a recent increase in vehicle-related crime across the Hall Green Constituency. Over the past few weeks, we have seen a rise in both opportunistic thefts from vehicles and more sophisticated thefts of high-value cars.
Our teams are increasing patrols and actively identifying offenders. However, we are asking for your help to remain vigilant and take a few simple steps to make your vehicle a "harder target."
Current Trends to Watch For ❗ Relay Theft (Keyless Entry): Thieves are using signal-amplifying devices to "grab" the signal from your key fob while it’s inside your house. This allows them to unlock and start your car in seconds without a physical key. Signal Jamming: Criminals may use jammers to block your key fob's signal when you press the lock button. Always check that your indicators flash or that you hear the mechanical "clunk" of the locks before walking away. Opportunistic Theft: Items left on display—such as bags, tools, or even loose change—continue to attract "smash and grab" incidents. How to Protect Your Vehicle 🔒 To help keep your property safe, we recommend the following layered security approach: Block the Signal: If you have a keyless entry car, store all keys (including spares) in a Faraday pouch or a metal tin when at home. This blocks the signal and prevents relay attacks. Use a Physical Deterrent: Old-fashioned steering wheel locks (like a Disklok) or pedal boxes are excellent visual deterrents. Most modern thieves carry electronic gadgets but are often unprepared for mechanical locks that take time and noise to remove. Park Defensively: If you have a driveway, park close to your property. If you have a garage, use it. If parking on the street, try to choose well-lit areas under the cover of CCTV or video doorbells. Check Your Software: Ensure your vehicle’s software is up to date, as manufacturers often release security patches to combat new hacking methods. Remove Valuables: Never leave anything on show. Even an empty bag can be enough for a thief to break a window to see what's inside.
How You Can Help Us 👮 We rely on your eyes and ears to help us protect the community. Please report any suspicious activity, such as: Individuals walking slowly between driveways late at night. People trying car door handles. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, always call 999 ☎️. For non-emergencies or to report information about previous incidents, please call 101 or use our online reporting portal.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our neighbourhood safe.
Kind regards, Sergeant Bridgewater - Hall Green and Springfield Neighbourhood Policing Team
