Dear Resident Local police are advising residents to remain vigilant following a recent increase in reports of thefts from motor vehicles across the local area. Many of these incidents have involved opportunistic thieves chancing their luck by trying car door handles to find unlocked vehicles as well as personal possessions being left on show.
To help protect your property and deter potential criminals, please follow this essential safety advice: 1. Secure Your Vehicle Every Time Double-Check Locks: Always lock your vehicle, even if you are only leaving it for a few moments or parking on your own driveway. Manual Check: Manually pull the handle to ensure it is secure before walking away. Windows & Sunroofs: Ensure all windows and sunroofs are fully closed to prevent "fishing" for items or door locks. 2. Remove All Items from Show Leave it Empty: Do not leave anything on display. Items like shopping bags, old coats, loose change, wallets and sunglasses can all tempt a thief to break a window. Remove any electronics this includes sat-nav/ dashcam mounts and wipe away suction marks from the windscreen, as these signal that valuables may be hidden inside. Glove Box : Consider leaving your glove box or centre console open (when empty) to show thieves there is nothing worth stealing. 3. Park Safely At Home: Use your garage if you have one, and ensure it is locked. If parking on a driveway, consider motion-activated lighting. In Public: Choose well-lit, open areas with high foot traffic. Look for 'Park Mark': When using public car parks, look for the Park Mark logo, which indicates the site has been vetted by police for safety and security. 4. Key Security Store Safely: Keep keys out of sight at home and away from the front door to prevent "fishing" through letterboxes. Keyless Entry: If you have a keyless vehicle, store fobs in a signal-blocking Faraday Pouch to prevent relay theft.
