Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, ranging from a single bag of rubbish to large items like mattresses, fridges, or construction debris, onto land without a proper license, posing serious environmental and health hazards like pollution and pest attraction.

It's a criminal offense that can lead to significant fines (up to £50,000), prosecution, or even prison, and you can be fined if you pay an unlicensed person to remove your waste and they dump it. 

You can report it to your local council via the GOV.UK website or council websites, often requiring photos and location details, with options to track the report. 

🔴What counts as fly-tipping?

• Household waste: Bin bags left by bins, old furniture, mattresses.

• Large items: Fridges, washing machines, sofas.

• Garden waste: Clippings dumped in lay-bys or public spaces.

• Commercial waste: Builders' rubble, tyres, renovation waste.

• Donations: Items left outside charity shops when closed. 

🔴Why is it a problem?

• Pollution: Harms wildlife, pollutes waterways.

• Health hazards: Attracts pests, creates fire risks, and can spread disease.

• Ugly environment: Spoils the look of neighbourhoods and open spaces. 

🔴What to do if you see it:

• Don't touch it: Especially if it's clinical waste or potentially hazardous.

• Report it: Use the GOV.UK report a fly-tipping tool or contact your local council directly.

• Provide details: Note the location, type of waste, and if possible, take photos (without getting too close).

• Check for offenders: Look for names, addresses, or any identifying details on the waste, but don't search the dumped items. 

🔴How to avoid being a culprit:

• Use your household recycling centre (tip if available).

• Hire a registered waste carrier (check with your council) for larger items.

• Ensure your rubbish is disposed of legally and not dumped by someone you paid.

From a small bag of rubbish to an unwanted mattress or worn-out settee, if rubbish is dumped somewhere without permission it is classed as fly-tipping. Fly-tipping is a crime – help put a stop to it.
