Courier Fraud - Police Impersonation Scam

Good afternoon Resident,

I want to make you aware of an ongoing scam currently in Kent. Fraudsters are cold-calling individuals and falsely claiming to be from police. They often state that they require your assistance with an ongoing investigation.

Please take a moment to read the advice below on how to remain vigilant and protect yourself from this type of fraud.

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters may claim:

They are investigating corrupt bank or police staff.

Your account is at risk and needs urgent action.

They need your help with a covert operation.

Their goal is to trick you into handing over money or personal information, either in person, online, via a money service bureau, or at your bank.

What They Might Ask You to Do

Visit your bank to withdraw a large sum of money, claiming it is counterfeit and needs forensic analysis.

Withdraw foreign currency to be collected by a courier from your home.

Provide your PIN over the phone and hand over your bank cards to a courier.

Purchase high-value items such as expensive watches.

Buy gift cards or vouchers.

Tactics Used to Avoid Detection

Claim it’s an undercover operation and you must not tell anyone.

Provide a cover story to tell bank staff or police (e.g., the money is for building work, a holiday, or a gift).

Protect Yourself

Be extremely cautious of unsolicited calls from people claiming to be from your bank or the police.

Speak to family or friends before taking any action.

Never share your PIN or hand over your bank cards or money to anyone following an unexpected call.

Remember

Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card, or request you to withdraw money or make purchases on their behalf.

Caution

If you receive an unexpected call, hang up immediately and use a different phone to verify the caller’s identity.
