Dear Residents,
Personal Safety & Robbery Crime Prevention Advice – Southall Area
Recent reports show an increase in personal robberies in the Southall area, particularly involving mobile phones, EarPods, and high‑value headphones. Thieves are often targeting people who are distracted, using devices openly, or walking alone. The following guidance is designed to help you stay alert, stay safe, and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
Keep Your Devices Out of Sight Avoid using your mobile phone or wearing visible EarPods/headphones while walking, especially in busy areas or near transport hubs. Keep phones in zipped pockets or bags when not in use. If you need to check your phone, step inside a shop or a safe, well‑lit area.
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings Be mindful of anyone approaching you on foot or on a bike/e‑scooter. Avoid walking while distracted, thieves often look for people who are unaware of what’s happening around them. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, move to a busier area.
Plan Your Route Stick to well‑lit, busy street whenever possible. Avoid shortcuts through alleyways, parks, or isolated areas, especially after dark. Let someone know your route and expected arrival time if travelling alone.
Reduce Distractions Using EarPods or headphones can make you less aware of people approaching. If you must use them, keep the volume low and only use one earbud. Secure Your Belongings Use bags that can be worn across the body and kept in front of you. Keep zips closed and valuables in inner compartments. Avoid displaying expensive jewellery, watches, or tech items.
Be Alert to Moped & Bike Snatches Thieves may approach quickly on bikes or mopeds. Stand away from the kerb when using your phone. Hold your device firmly and close to your body.
If You Feel Unsafe Move towards a busy shop, café, or public place. Approach a member of staff, security, or police officer for assistance. In an emergency, always call 999. For non‑emergencies, report incidents via 101 or online at the police website.
Know Your Phone’s IMEI Number Every mobile phone has a unique identification number called an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). This number helps police, and your network provider identify, block, or disable your phone if it is stolen. You can find your IMEI by typing *#06# into your phone’s keypad. Make a note of this number and keep it somewhere safe and not on your phone. Your IMEI helps: Police confirm ownership and assist in investigations Network providers block the device so it cannot be used Insurance companies process claims more quickly
Registering your device on tracking services (such as Find My iPhone or Find My Device) and keeping your IMEI recorded gives you the best chance of recovering your phone and protecting your data.
After a Theft Do not chase the suspect. It can be dangerous. Report the incident immediately. Use your device’s tracking features (e.g., Find My iPhone / Find My Device) if safe to do so. Contact your network provider to block the phone and protect your data.
