I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. I am writing to inform you that burglaries have occurred in your ward and neighbouring wards. These crimes were reported during the week commencing Monday 29th December, which coincided with the holiday period.
Several of the reported offences occurred while properties were temporarily unoccupied, for example when residents were away visiting family or on holiday. In some cases, entry was gained through doors or windows, as well as via communal areas within blocks of flats. A range of personal items, including jewellery, electronic devices, and parcels, were taken in some incidents, while others involved attempted entry or disturbance only.
We understand that the holiday period can present additional challenges for residents, and we would like to reassure the community that these reports are being actively reviewed and investigated. We are sharing the information below to help raise awareness and support residents in protecting their homes where possible.
You may wish to consider the following general precautions, particularly when away from home or during quieter periods:
• Please ensure doors and windows are properly secured when leaving the property. • In blocks of flats, please help keep communal entrances secure and report any damaged or faulty entry systems. • If you are away, a neighbour, friend, or family member may be able to check on your home, take in deliveries, or keep an eye out for anything unusual. • Delaying holiday related posts on social media until after returning home can reduce unwanted attention. • CCTV, doorbell cameras, and alarms, where available, can provide reassurance and assist investigations. • If you receive an unexpected caller, take a moment to verify their identity before allowing entry. • If you notice anything that does not feel right, such as unfamiliar individuals entering communal areas or appearing to examine nearby properties, please report this. • In an emergency or if a crime is in progress: call 999 • To report suspicious activity or share information: call 101 or report online on www.met.police.uk • You can also report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
Thank you for helping to look out for one another and supporting community safety across our wards.
Kind regards,
PS Johnny Farrugia 580AW
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
