West Midlands Police Advice to Wolverhampton Drivers During Icy Weather
Good morning Resident West Midlands Police is urging all motorists in Wolverhampton and the surrounding areas to take extra care when driving during the current icy and freezing weather conditions. As temperatures drop overnight, roads can quickly become hazardous due to ice forming on untreated surfaces, particularly on bridges, shaded roads, rural routes and side streets. Even experienced drivers can be caught out by sudden loss of traction, and braking distances can increase significantly. Our advice to drivers is simple: slow down, plan ahead, and only travel if necessary.
If you must drive, please consider the following safety advice:Reduce your speed — driving too fast for the conditions is one of the main causes of winter collisions. Even at low speeds, ice can cause you to lose control. Increase your following distance — leave at least ten times the normal gap between you and the vehicle in front on icy roads. Brake gently and early — harsh braking can cause your vehicle to skid. Apply pressure smoothly and allow more time to stop. Use higher gears where possible — pulling away in second gear can help reduce wheel spin. Avoid sudden steering or acceleration — make all movements slow and deliberate. Check your vehicle before setting off — ensure your windscreen is fully cleared, lights are working, tyres are properly inflated and have adequate tread, and washer fluid is topped up with winter-grade fluid. Carry essentials — a charged mobile phone, warm clothing, a blanket, water, and a torch can be invaluable if you become stranded.
Pedestrians and cyclistsDrivers should be especially alert for pedestrians and cyclists, who are more vulnerable in icy conditions and may be moving more slowly or unpredictably to avoid slipping.
In the event of an incidentIf you are involved in or come across a collision or a stranded vehicle: Make sure you are safe before stopping. Do not put yourself at risk by standing in the carriageway. Call emergency services if anyone is injured or the road is blocked. Think before you travelWhere possible, consider whether your journey is essential. Delaying travel until conditions improve can prevent collisions and reduce pressure on emergency services. West Midlands Police will continue to monitor road conditions and respond to incidents across the region. By working together and taking simple precautions, we can all help keep Wolverhampton’s roads safer this winter. Stay safe and take care when travelling.
