I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Our Commitment to Tackling Burglary Update on Burglary Prevention and Police Action in Your Area Dear Residents, We understand that burglary is a significant concern for our communities. In 2025/26, the Metropolitan Police is taking a "community-first" approach to ensure everyone feels safe in their home. What We Are Doing: • Attendance Guarantee: We have committed to attending the scene of every residential burglary report. This ensures early evidence collection by dedicated investigation teams or forensics officers. • Increased Local Presence: Under the "New Met for London" plan, we are deploying more officers and PCSOs into local wards to provide visible patrols and direct community engagement. • Data-Driven Targeting: We are using advanced data to identify and target high-harm offenders and burglary "hotspots," focusing resources where they are most needed. • Enhanced Powers: New legislation in 2025, such as the Crime and Policing Bill, grants officers enhanced powers to enter premises without a warrant if stolen items (like mobile phones) are geolocated there. How You Can Help: While we continue to pursue offenders, you can significantly reduce your risk by following these steps: • Double Lock: Always double lock your doors and secure windows every time you leave. • Mark Your Property: Etch or mark valuables with your postcode or register them for free at Immobilise to help us return stolen goods. • Visible Deterrents: Use timer switches for lights, install doorbell cameras, and keep garden tools locked away so they cannot be used as climbing aids. • Keep it Visible: Ensure the front of your property is visible from the street by keeping hedges low (around one meter) to deny burglars a place to hide. For more detailed advice, please visit the Metropolitan Police Home Security Guide. If you see suspicious activity, report it online at met.police.uk or call 101. In an emergency, always dial 999. Together, we can make our community safer.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
