I wanted to provide you an update regarding Shoplifting, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. This morning the Safer Neighbourhoods Team were able to secure an early Christmas present for our retailers.
Mr Paul Haughey is well known for frequenting shops around Camden Town, particularly Sainsburys and Holland & Barrett where he helps himself to goods but chooses not to pay.
The Team attended Highbury Corner Magistrates this morning where an application for a Criminal Behaviour Order was heard and I'm delighted to say was granted for 5 years.
The CBO comes with the conditions below:
He must not:
1. Enter Camden High Street or any surrounding roads as defined by the map.
2. Travel on the Prohibited Section of Camden Road.
3. Enter, try to enter or loiter outside of any Sainsburys, Holland and Barrett or Boots anywhere in England and Wales
4. Enter, try to enter or loiter outside any retail premises within the London Borough of Camden without being able to demonstrate that he has the means of payment for any intended purchase.
5. Give false details to any store security guard who requests that he identify himself
6. Have in his possession any articles which are used in the taking of Class A drugs, including but not limited to pipes, syringes, needles, wire wool or other gauze.
Mr Haughey didn't bother to attend court today, so the order is live as soon as we track him down and let him know about, which on previous experience shouldn't take long.
We are really pleased that the courts agreed with us that such stringent conditions were necessary in order to protect the businesses and their staff in Camden who have to deal with his behaviour.
Shoplifting is a crime that can have a substantial negative impact on local businesses across London. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. For more guidance, see our page on how to spot a shoplifter. We are working on our brand-new strategy for how we police London and we want your help. Our New Met for London: Phase 2 strategy will guide how we deliver on behalf of Londoners over the next three years. |
