Protect Your Pets – Dog Theft Awareness & Prevention

I wanted to provide you an update regarding Personal theft (e.g. pick pocketing, no violence used), which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey.

Recently in Plaistow, we have noticed a rise in attempted dog thefts. Your local Safer Neighborhood Teams (SNT) have been increasing their visibility around the Plaistow Park area and surrounding roads to help identify and deter dog thieves. Please take some time to educate yourself on some of the following techniques which may help deter would be thieves and better protect you and your pets.

Stay alert on walks: Avoid distractions like headphones, keep dogs on a short lead, and vary your walking routes and times. Stick to well populated areas with good lighting, avoiding isolated routes. If street lights are not working, report this to your local council.

Secure your home and garden: Lock gates, install alarms or CCTV, and never leave dogs unattended outside.

Microchip and ID: Ensure your dog is microchipped and your contact details are up to date. Use a collar tag with your surname and phone number (not the dog’s name).

Limit social media sharing: Avoid posting your location or details about your dog online.

Consider tech solutions: GPS trackers and reinforced leads can add extra security.

Report suspicious activity: If you see anyone acting strangely around dogs, contact 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also report anonymously via Crimestoppers
