World Suicide Prevention Day: You Are Not Alone — How West Midlands Police Stand With You
Good afternoon Resident Every year on 10 September, people and organisations around the world observe World Suicide Prevention Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide and suicidal thoughts, and reminding everyone that suicide can be prevented with the right support and connection. It’s a chance to talk openly about mental health, reach out to others, and share resources that can genuinely save lives.
What World Suicide Prevention Day Means World Suicide Prevention Day was established to encourage communities, leaders and individuals to act — to show compassion, listen without judgment, and foster hope for those who are struggling. The day reinforces that suicide isn’t inevitable and that small acts of care and connection can make a profound difference in someone’s life.
West Midlands Police: Supporting People in Crisis At West Midlands Police, we want you to know this: 👉 It’s OK to not be OK. 👉 You are not alone. 👉 There are people and services ready to listen and help. We support individuals and communities through a range of actions and guidance, whether you’re struggling with suicidal thoughts, have concerns about someone else, or are managing feelings of self-harm. 1. Your Safety Comes First If you or someone else is in immediate danger — whether that’s thoughts of harming yourself or serious self-harm — call 999 straight away. Police and other emergency responders are here to protect life and will respond as quickly as possible to keep you safe. 2. Welfare Guidance and Helpful Signposting We provide clear guidance on what to do if you’re concerned about someone’s wellbeing. This includes practical advice on when to call for emergency help, and when to reach out to mental health services and charities who specialise in emotional support. 3. Reporting and Safety Online We take online harms seriously. If you see content that encourages serious self-harm or someone appears to be at risk, there are ways to report it to us — and to social media platforms — to get it addressed quickly. 4. Training and Partnerships West Midlands Police works with health professionals, social care services and community organisations so that the right care reaches the right person at the right time. Having specially trained partners attend crisis situations helps reduce trauma and ensures more effective support. 5. Supporting Colleagues and Communities Mental health isn’t just a community issue — it affects police officers and staff too. The West Midlands Police Federation encourages officers to check in on one another, talks openly about stress and anxiety, and reminds colleagues that help is available and asking for support is a strength, not a weakness.
You Matter — Let’s Start the ConversationIf you’re reading this and feel overwhelmed, please know that talking about how you feel is a powerful first step toward feeling better. There are many free, confidential support services available in the UK, such as Samaritans on 116 123 or HOPELINEUK for young people. These services are there to listen — day or night — without judgment. And if you’re worried about someone else, taking the time to ask “are you OK?” could be the support they need to feel seen and heard. Those conversations matter more than you might think.
We’re Here — You’re Not AloneOn this World Suicide Prevention Day and every day, West Midlands Police stands with you. Whether in moments of crisis or quieter times of struggle, we encourage compassion, connection, and reaching out for help. It’s okay not to be okay — but you don’t have to face it alone.
