I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Vehicle crime (theft from or theft of), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. We are advising residents in Sidmouth and the surrounding area to be vigilant following a recent series of thefts of vehicle number plates across the area. There have been several thefts reported since the beginning of November 2025.
Criminals often steal plates to use them on other vehicles to commit further offences, such as 'bilking' (driving away without paying for fuel) or avoiding detection for other crimes.
Appeal for Information - Have you seen anything suspicious, or do you have CCTV/Dashcam footage that could help? If you saw someone loitering around parked vehicles, especially late at night or early morning. If you have a home CCTV or dashcam that may have captured an incident. Please contact us immediately with any information, no matter how small it may seem. 📞 Call 101 and quote crime reference number 50250313960 💻 Report online via the police website. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Crime Prevention Advice - Don't make your vehicle an easy target! We strongly urge you to take steps to secure your number plates: 🔒 Use Anti-Theft Screws: Replace your standard screws with tamper-resistant or 'one-way' security screws. They are difficult to remove without specialist tools and are a simple, low-cost deterrent. 🅿️ Park Smart: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage. If you must park on the street, choose a well-lit, busy area or a spot covered by CCTV. ✅ Regular Checks: Take a moment to check that your plates are securely attached before you drive off.
By working together, we can make Sidmouth a less appealing target for thieves. Thank you for your continued support.
