Summertime Safety Message from West Midlands Police – Wolverhampton
Hi Resident As we approach the end of the school term, children and young people across Wolverhampton will soon be starting their long-awaited summer holidays. This is an exciting time for families, but it’s also a period when we traditionally see an increase in certain types of incidents. West Midlands Police is encouraging parents, carers, and young people to keep safety front of mind over the coming weeks.
Staying Safe in the CommunityWarmer weather and more free time often mean children spending longer outdoors. We want everyone to enjoy themselves safely: Plan ahead – Make sure younger children know where they’re allowed to go, who they’re with, and when they should be home. Know how to get help – Ensure children understand how and when to dial 999 in an emergency, and how to use 101 for non-urgent concerns. Be aware of local risks – Construction sites, railway lines, canals, and busy roads can pose dangers. Remind children to stay away from places they shouldn’t be.
Online SafetyDuring the holidays, many young people spend extra time online. We urge families to: Monitor social media use and ensure privacy settings are switched on. Discuss safe online behaviour, including not sharing personal details or arranging to meet people they’ve only spoken to online. Report concerns around online grooming, bullying, or harmful content to police or CEOP.
Anti-Social BehaviourWe know that the majority of young people behave responsibly, but summertime can sometimes bring an increase in anti-social behaviour (ASB). We’re working closely with schools, youth services, and community groups to make sure young people have safe, positive activities available. Parents and carers can help by: Talking to children about the consequences of ASB. Knowing where they are spending time. Encouraging involvement in local clubs, sports sessions, and youth programmes.
Road and Cycle SafetyMore children out and about means extra care is needed on our roads: Remind children to use crossings, avoid distractions like mobile phones, and stay visible. If cycling or scootering, helmets and protective gear should be worn, and riders should know the rules of the road.
Heat and Water SafetyAs temperatures rise: Never swim in open water such as rivers, reservoirs, or lakes – cold water shock is a real and often fatal danger. Stay hydrated and use sunscreen. Younger children should always be supervised around paddling pools and water play areas.
Working Together West Midlands Police will be increasing patrols in key locations across Wolverhampton over the summer period, working with partners to keep communities safe. We ask residents to look out for one another and report anything that doesn’t seem right.
We wish all our young people a safe, enjoyable, and positive summer break. If you have concerns or need advice, please contact West Midlands Police via 999 in an emergency, 101 for non-urgent matters, or through Live Chat on our website. Stay safe, Wolverhampton!
