Community Crime Prevention Message – Protect Your Vehicle from Crime |
Dear Resident As the darker nights draw in, Northamptonshire Police would like to remind residents of the importance of taking extra precautions to keep your vehicles, belongings, and our community safe. Vehicle crime can be deeply frustrating for victims, but by taking some simple steps, you can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a target. Our aim is to work together as a community to make our neighbourhoods safer. Many vehicle crimes are opportunistic, with offenders taking advantage of unlocked doors or valuables left on display. A few small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference. Vehicle Security Tips Always Lock Your Vehicle: Double-check all doors, windows, and the boot are secured every time you leave your vehicle, even if you’re only stepping away for a moment. Remove All Valuables: The single most effective deterrent is to remove everything from your vehicle. This includes sat navs, phones, bags, coats, loose change, and even charging cables. Keep Keys Safe: Store car keys out of sight and away from doors and windows in your home—thieves can use tools to grab them or employ relay attack technology. Park Smartly: When possible, park in well-lit, busy areas or use a secure car park. Consider reversing into your driveway to make it harder for thieves to tow your car away. Use Extra Security: For added protection, consider a steering wheel lock or gear stick lock, which are visible deterrents to opportunistic thieves. Secure the Garage: Don’t forget to lock your garage if your vehicle is parked inside. Ensure garage doors meet the latest security standards.
Reporting and Sharing Information Information from the public plays a huge part in helping us tackle crime and protect our communities. You know your neighbourhood better than anyone — if something doesn’t seem right, please let us know. Even small details can make a big difference.
