A 24-year-old man from Newmarket has been banned from driving after being caught behind the wheel while almost twice the legal alcohol limit.
Aidan Keeley, of Fordham Road, appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Friday 5 December, where he was disqualified from driving for 18 months. This will be reduced by 18 weeks if he completes an approved course.
Keeley was also fined £500 and ordered to pay a £200 fine and £110 in costs.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday 5 October 2025, when at approximately 1.05am officers on patrol in High Street, Newmarket, observed a vehicle being driven erratically and swerving over the central white line.
Officers stopped the vehicle and found Keeley to be the driver. He was then asked to take a roadside breath test which he failed, so he was arrested and taken into police custody where he provided an evidential sample of breath, which gave a reading of 65 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath (the legal limit is 35mg in 100ml).
PC Sage, the arresting officer from the Forest Heath Response Investigation Team, said: “The court hearing took place during our annual Christmas campaign highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
“Aidan Keeley was almost twice the legal alcohol limit when we stopped him and it was fortunate that he wasn’t involved in a collision, as he was obviously not in control of the car by the manner of driving we witnessed.
“This case is a timely reminder of the risks involved in drink driving and also the consequences. Not only has he lost his licence for 18 months but must also pay over £800 in fines and other costs.
“Our message is simple – don’t take the risk, it is not worth it. Plan your journey home and don’t gamble with peoples’ lives or your own livelihood.”
