We know e-scooters are becoming a popular gift and a convenient way to get around. However, we want to make sure our community is fully aware of the current laws and risks before you spend your money.

The Law

In the UK, privately owned e-scooters cannot be legally ridden on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, or public spaces.

They can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission.

If you use a private e-scooter in a public place, you could face:
• Police seizure of the scooter
• A fine and penalty points on your driving licence
• Potential prosecution if involved in a collision

Why This Matters

We’re seeing more collisions and near-misses involving e-scooters across Sussex. Many riders — especially young people — are unaware that:
• E-scooters can reach high speeds and have limited braking ability
• They are often difficult for other road users to see
• Riders are vulnerable to serious injury
• Parents can be held legally responsible if a child is found riding one illegally

Before You Buy

If you’re considering purchasing an e-scooter as a gift, please think carefully.
What may seem like a fun or practical present could lead to safety risks, legal issues, and financial loss.

Our Advice

• If you already own an e-scooter, keep it off public roads and spaces
• Talk to children and young people about the law
• Consider safer, legal alternatives for travel
