I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Crime Prevention Advice: Keeping your flat safe
Outbuildings: Keep cycle stores, bin stores, sheds and other covered areas locked and secured. These hidden spaces can attract loitering and lead to antisocial behaviour, this is especially important during winter months due to the cold and early sunset.
Communal doors: Your communal door is only effective if it is closed and secure, so always remember to check that it locks behind you. If it doesn’t, then report it to your management agent or landlord so it can be repaired quickly. Do not buzz in someone that you do not know and do not allow anyone to follow you in to the communal area
Flat doors/windows: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked and not just shut when leaving the building, this is particularly important when living on the ground floor. Sash stops for your windows are a good tool to deter burglars who may have believed that your window was insecure. Sash stops ensure that the window cannot be opened wide enough for an intruder to fit through.
 While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
