Dear Resident
Do you have concerns about your partner or the partner of someone you know? Have you wondered if they have a history of violence or domestic abuse. If you have genuine concerns, there is a way to find out using #ClaresLaw. Clare’s Law - the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) has two options for dissemination of information, the ‘right to ask’ empowers people to be able to ask about their partner. Additionally, we have the power under ‘right to know’ to proactively tell people about those who pose a risk of domestic abuse so they can make an informed decision. Since 2024, we have processed 687 requests and made over 1,500 disclosures. This has meant people have been able to make informed decisions about their relationships and also provides the opportunity for us to discuss any concerns they have about their partner's behaviour. This is just one of the ways we work. We have a number of ways to tackle violence against women and girls (VAWG) – including stalking protection orders and domestic violence protection orders (DVPOs). We urge anyone with concerns about a partner’s history, or the history of the partner of someone you know to use Clare’s Law. If you are worried, ask. For more information on Clare’s Law and how to make a request, visit: The scheme is named after Clare Wood who was murdered by her abusive ex-boyfriend in 2009.
