Think before you parkā¦
The vast majority of people park in a considerate manner and if they park on a pavement it is only by a few inches, leaving enough room for a double buggy, large wheelchair or guide dog and owner to get past.
However there are a minority of motorists that park fully on the pavement or up against street furniture making it impossible or extremely difficult to get past. When a vehicle is parked on a pavement next to an overgrown hedge, lamp post or tree, the problem becomes worse. A blind pavement user is either forced to go into the road which has inherent dangers that this brings, or more likely to end up with a face full of hedge or an injury from a tree branch.
An obstruction can also impact on access by emergency services vehicles. Parking on pavements also causes cracked paving slabs, which can create further access problems for pedestrians. Car parks can be used where provided for safe and unobstructive parking, making the use of the highway more pleasurable for all. So please ensure you use them.
Where there is a round sign of a car with a motorbike suspended over it and a red circle round with a working 'except for access underneath, this indicates that this road is for residents use only or for drivers with a valid reason to be down there. It is an offence to use this road without legitimate reason. The safety of pedestrians is far more important than finding a close spot to leave your car.
While some enforcement activity is carried out jointly with partners, (relevant local authority) employ parking enforcement officers to assist with these issues. But often problems can be resolved through raising awareness of the impact or consequences or other practical measures.
