1st South Hornchurch Squirrels |

Safer Neighbourhood officers were kindly invited to attend the 1st Scout Hornchurch Squirrels unit (Elm Park) as they had recently been learning about ‘Local heroes’.
It was great to take part in one of their meetings and be introduced to the children. During the session, officers were able to talk with them about local police and what we do including the opportunity for the children to ask us questions and for us to test them on their knowledge!
The children were even given the opportunity to dress up as police officers/community support officers which they loved. Even the leaders tried on the uniform too!
Each child had the opportunity to sit in the front of a Police van and were shown how to operate the blue lights, which they thoroughly enjoyed and were eager to tell all their friends about the following day at school.
The children interacted with us so well, for many of them this was their first ever interaction with police and I believe that it was a positive one which will remain in their (and their families) memories for many years to come. These engagements are so important in building trust with our younger members of the community.
Laura (one of the mums) said “The children had a blast and will help towards their ‘local heroes’ badge. Their enjoyment was demonstrated at collection, hearing them tell their parents what had happen. This was an excellent example of communities first as it demonstrated to the adults there ‘we’ are still here keeping your streets safe but will make time to engage and educate our younger members of the community. I also feel it rebuilt relations and confidence with the parents following recent negative press about The Met.“
