Home Burglary Crime Prevention Advice In light of this incident, please take a moment to review and implement the following basic crime prevention measures to better secure your home: 1. Secure Entry Points Lock Up: Always ensure all doors and windows, including ground-floor windows, garage access, and patio doors, are locked, even when you are home or leaving for a short time. Sliding Doors: Fit anti-lift locks or security bars to all sliding glass doors. Keys: Never leave spare keys in obvious hiding places like under doormats or flowerpots. 2. Deterrence and Visibility Lighting: Install motion-sensor exterior lighting at all entry points. Ensure the front door and porch areas are well-lit after dark. Alarms: If you have a security system, ensure it is set every time you leave the house and whenever you go to bed. Display alarm company signs prominently. Tidy Yards: Trim bushes and shrubs near windows and doors to eliminate hiding spots for intruders. 3. When You Are Away Mail & Deliveries: Arrange for a trusted neighbor to collect your mail, newspapers, and clear flyers from your porch, as a full mailbox is a sign of an unoccupied home. Timers: Use automatic light timers (or smart lighting systems) to switch internal lights on and off at random times to simulate occupancy. Social Media: Avoid posting about your travel plans or current location on social media until after you return. 4. Neighborhood Watch Watch Out: Be alert for unfamiliar vehicles or individuals loitering in the area. Report Suspicion: Don't hesitate to report suspicious activity to the police immediately. It is better to be safe than sorry

While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on.
